An Introduction to the Nook

Here’s a sneak peak at the first section of the ebook guide to Barnes & Noble’s nook:

Barnes & Noble has released the nook eBook reader, which lets you access over one million eBooks, eNewspapers, and eMagazines in two different ways, depending on where you are. It uses the same 3G wireless technology that cell phones use, but it also automatically detects Wi-Fi hotspots, which are free in all Barnes & Noble stores. With either connection, you’ll be able to download eBooks wirelessly in seconds and begin reading right away. There is no charge for nook’s wireless features and you do not need a contract.

The nook is very easy to use for those familiar with using a cell phone. The color touchscreen controls are similar to the iPhone and other smartphones with touch screen technology. An easy-to-read E Ink® display makes reading in light or dark situations easy on the eyes.

It’s easy to shop for new things to read, too. Just tap on “Shop” and you’ll enter the Barnes & Noble eBookstore with thousands of free titles and bestsellers for as little as $9.99. Barnes & Noble says there are more than a million titles available. New, free content is also added daily so check back often.

If you want to share your purchases, there is LendMe technology which lets you loan your eBooks to friends. All you need is their email address and all they need is a free, compatible reader from Barnes & Noble. [Learn more about LendMe in the ebook guide!]

If something happens to your nook, a copy of all your eBook purchases will be available for you to download as many times as you like from your online eBook Library and if you have already purchased books to your online eBook Library, they will be instantly available on your nook as soon as you register your nook with your online B&N.com account.

You can go into Barnes & Noble stores and try nook for yourself. Starting on December 7th, 2009, you can visit your local Barnes & Noble store and experience nook. All stores will have a demonstration unit for customers to try. Read your eBooks across a wide range of devices in addition to your nook by downloading the free Barnes & Noble eReader application on your iPhone, iPod touch, BlackBerry smartphone, or Windows or Mac laptops or desktop computers. eBooks purchased from BN.com will sync between your nook and other reading devices with the Barnes & Noble eReader application, so you always return to the last page you read.

The nook supports eBooks written in most Western European Languages, including French, German, Italian, and Spanish. It does not support characters from non-western alphabets. It also displays PDF documents in different languages and different character sets as long as the font is embedded in the file.
