This is a nook sleeve (which is just a neoprene case, really) from Wal-Mart.com, which they describe as, “A thin, sexy, compact device deserves a thin, sexy, protective cover. To complement the sleekness of new e-reader devices, our Skinny Sleeve uses a unique stretch stitch seam to allow for ultra-thin fully padded protection and even includes a sewn-in screen guard.” I thought I’d add some other vendors in the mix for those who want an alternative to Amazon.com. In any case, it gives a good comparison for those looking for nook sleeves and cases.

Some people are asking, “What if you don’t like any of the e-books chosen for you?” You can find out first by browsing the full list of all 30 books here, which includes The Good Housekeeping Cookbook and Country Living’s The Mom’s Guide to Running a Business. Other people would rather pick one ebook of their choice instead of having 30 offered to them chosen by the company. Still others are complaining that the value proposition is just not there considering that some of the titles are in the public domain (Read: free).

I you are looking for a case to slip the Nook Color into and want to prevent it from being scratched or cracked when carried in a briefcase or left around on a night table, this sleeve seems well made for the price with good zippers and an external zippered pocket for the cable, etc. It feels good to hold as well. It is a good value for the price. It also works for the Quantaray 7″ tablet. It fits it perfectly and the charger, even though a bit bulky, fits in the front pocket. It protects the tablet and has very stylish looks as well.

E-readers are taking over the tablet market.

NPR recently wrote an article about rooting the Nook Color called, Cheaper Than a Tablet. Yes, people are actually buying the Nook Color and rooting them, which means it’s a form of hacking them (using them in a way it’s not intended). Root just means getting to the base operating system and taking control of it. Once they have control of it, what they’re doing is re-functioning or reusing it as a tablet device that can access the Internet – and in some cases getting the Internet free such as with the Amazon Kindle – and in other cases like the Nook Color they’re able to run Android and get on Wi-Fi hotspots.

Nook Color, when you view it that way, it’s the cheapest tablet computer out there if you don’t count the recent price drop by Sprint for the Galaxy Tab. But the market is heating up and it’s not just nerds anymore. It’s not just geeks doing this stuff. It’s going more main stream. So it’s just a matter of time before the powers that be, the owners and manufacturers of these devices catch on and either start to market segment and create devices specifically for this
function, or to try to get in the middle of it, or to try to stop it. Or they may just let it ride because people are going to buy this no matter what the use.
